The University of Miami School of Architecture team, one of five leading design schools participating in the Envision Resilience Nantucket Challenge, is no stranger to sea level rise. The team representing Miami in the Challenge is using their experience with rising seas in their own city, paired with the school’s in-depth coastal urban resilience curriculum, to consider how the island of Nantucket might adapt. Their proposed design includes a three-layered approach with the theme of “Living with Water.”

On a recent Friday afternoon in February, the worlds of 11th Hour Racing and ReMain Nantucket converged over a Zoom call with undergraduate and graduate students from five universities participating in the Envision Resilience Nantucket Challenge. The sibling organization to ReMain Nantucket, 11th Hour Racing shares the mission of supporting sustainable, equitable coastal communities.

Nantucketers are alarmed about climate change, according to results of a new survey conducted by ReMain Nantucket and ACKlimate and released today. An analysis of the survey, conducted in January, found that Nantucketers are far more likely to be alarmed about climate change than the national average, 73 percent compared to 26 percent.

ACKlimate, the community partnership organization at the forefront of amplifying climate change efforts on Nantucket, was born out of the 2019 Preservation Institute: Nantucket program. We recently caught up with Kimberly Rose, ACKlimate’s founder to hear what the organization is working on and where she sees the group going in the future.

The Envision Resilience Nantucket Challenge, with the goal of inspiring Nantucket and other coastal communities around the world to envision innovative adaptations to sea level rise, began as a call to action. In the fall of 2019, Wendy Schmidt—founder of ReMain Nantucket—and the team at ReMain Nantucket sat down to talk about sea level rise: a dire issue for coastal communities around the globe.

ReMain Nantucket issued a survey today to measure attitudes about climate change from Nantucket residents and visitors as part of the Envision Resilience Nantucket Challenge, in which graduate students will design and propose adaptive solutions to sea level rise this spring.

ReMain Nantucket announced today the five universities that will participate in the Envision Resilience Nantucket Challenge to address sea level rise: University of Florida College of Design, Construction and Planning, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, University of Miami School of Architecture, The School of Architecture at Northeastern University and Yale School of Architecture.

ReMain Nantucket announced this week the inception of Envision Resilience Nantucket Challenge, a coastal-resilience initiative that will leverage academia and local leadership to develop and consider innovative and adaptive solutions to sea-level rise.
